Scouts complete the night hike challenge

On Saturday 10th March at 20:25, Five scouts (and two supporting adults) set out on the Scouts Monopoly Night Hike Challenge.

They walked a gruelling Eight kilometres (five miles) over rough terrain , stopping briefly for water and snacks and completed four Monopoly style challenges before returning at 01:40 for sleep over.

Well done to all five scouts (and the parent helpers) for completing the challenge and representing 1st Welwyn Scout Group in this annual district event.

District Camp May 2018

We are pleased to let you know that the next camp for 1st Welwyn Scout Group is now confirmed.

1st Welwyn Scout Group will be attending District Camp at Lees Wood in May 2018

Date: 18th to 20th May 2018.

Open to all sections of 1st Welwyn Scout Group: Beavers, Cubs and Scouts

£45 – Whole weekend: This covers two nights camping, all activities and catering for the whole weekend

£25 – Day visitor: Your child can attend for the day on Saturday 19th.  Cost Includes Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner and all activities.

Seven scout groups from the Mid Herts District will all come together for the weekend to join in loads of activities and team building fun. We will be providing lots of 20160522_065427activities over the weekend… Over the next few days we are actually asking the young people what activities they would like to see at camp so that we can book the activities and/or hire activities in if required, and of course no camp would be complete without a camp fire.

This year the district is trying to promote #OneDistrict, this means we can expect this to be an amazing experience for the young people from the moment they arrive to the moment they leave.

This is the once in a year opportunity for all sections, beavers, cubs and scouts to get together. On this type of camp it is great to see everyone supporting each other, particularly the older members helping the younger members on what is probably their first ever camp or night away from home.

This is a great opportunity for the young people to experience the great outdoors, have fun, make new friends, try something Camp firenew, have some “screen free” time and earn some all important badges.

If you have any questions please contact the camp leader (Emma Pearce emma.pearce@outlookcom) or your section leader

To enrol your son or daughter for District Camp 2018 please fill in the simple form below.

Once this is done please pay £45 per camper by BACS to the 1st Welwyn scout group bank account.

The deadline for enrolment is Friday 23rd March

Note: You must be the legal parent or guardian of the camper to fill in this form.

1st Welwyn Beavers makes the pledge for road safety week

We are taking part in the UK’s biggest road safety event, Road Safety Week (21-27 November), coordinated by Brake, the road safety charity. This year, thousands of organisations, schools and community groups are backing the Make the Brake Pledge campaign, helping to spread awareness about six simple things to save lives and the planet.

As part of the campaign, We will be learning about road safety awareness in this weeks Beaver meeting.

The Road Safety Week 2016 theme, Make the Brake Pledge, is about people all over the country understanding six key things they can do to protect themselves and the people around them, and reduce emissions and pollution from vehicles. The six Brake Pledge points are: Slow, Sober, Secure, Silent, Sharp and Sustainable.

Every day, five people are killed and more than 60 people are seriously injured on UK roads [1][2]. There are an estimated further 29,000 deaths from particulate matter pollution in the UK [3], 5,000 of which are attributable to road transport [4], and an additional 23,500 deaths from NO2 [5]. Brake is asking everyone to help end this needless suffering by spreading the word in Road Safety Week about the life-saving importance of the Pledge.

To mark the start of Road Safety Week, Brake will be releasing the results of research revealing what people perceive to be the biggest threats on Britain’s roads, and what dangerous habits they admit to having themselves. Find out more in the Road Safety Week newsroom from Monday 21 November, or email news@brake.org.uk to request an embargoed press release for your region the week before.

 Road Safety Week

Road Safety Week is the UK’s flagship event to promote safer road use, coordinated annually by the charity Brake and involving thousands of schools, communities and organisations across the country. Road Safety Week 2016 takes place 21-27 November, with support from the Department for Transport and sponsors Specsavers and Aviva.

Scouts and Guides at lower risk of mental illness in later life

Researchers say programmes that help children develop self-reliance and teamwork may have lifelong benefits

Joining the Scouts or Guides in childhood appears to help lower the risk of mental illness in later life, a study suggests.

Children who participate in the organisations – which aim to develop qualities such as self-reliance, resolve and a desire for self-learning – are likely to go on to have better mental health in middle age, the findings show.

Remembrance day and rededication of war memorial

Remembrance Sunday is a special day for us to all pause, reflect and remember those who have lost their lives in war.  This year was particularly important because we unveiled a new memorial plaque to remember the scouts from 1st Welwyn who lost their lives in war.

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

it all started in 1914 with World War I.  Then 100 years ago in 1916 there was a landmark battle between Allied forces and the German army in the battle of the Somme;  With great sadness over 1 million soldiers were killed or injured during this battle.  We learned all about this battle in Beavers on Tuesday 8th November and we made four poppy wreaths to remember those who lost their lives.

Then on Remembrance Sunday (September 13th 2016) we joined up with 2nd Welwyn scout group and other uniformed organisations to march through the village to the war memorial where we laid the poppy wreaths in remembranceLe

Lest we forget – We will remember you!

Can you join the team?

In the last 12 months the 1st Welwyn Scout Group has grown from 40 young people to over 70 young people.  The young people have attended four camps.  but all of this is only possible with the support of some very kind hearted volunteers.

Did you know that most members of the scout organisation are volunteers.  At 1st Welwyn we all started off as parents and gradually started to help out and eventually put on a uniform and are now leading a section.  It’s a great learning opportunity for both leaders and young people alike.  The Scout organisation also provides formal training for anyone who wants to become a uniformed leader.

It’s so rewarding to see the young people develop, learn new things, try things that they would not normally try at home or at school.

Do you want to be part of this amazing team?  Even if you can’t help regularly every week at one of the meetings we have other important and exciting roles on the leadership team.

Current Vacancies:

  • Assistant Beaver Scout Leader
  • Chairman
  • Fundraiser
  • Headquarters Maintenance

If you are interested in any of these roles please click here to fill in a contact us form

Beavers – 6th September 2016

First day back after the summer holidays and the fun begins.

This week we focussed on the “my teamwork badge”.  We started off sharing the fun we had during the summer holidays with our lodges.  Then we had two team games.

First challenge:  Each team of Beavers were given 6 sheets of A3 paper and had to work as a team to cross the river on their make shift bridge.  The rules were that each sheet of paper must be touching at least one sheet of paper and that no Beaver could step on to the “river”.  It was great to see the Beavers working as a team to solve this problem.

Second challenge.  Simon Says “shapes”.  The leader would call out a shape and the team had to make that shape with their body’s either on their own or making the shape as a group.  For example.  As a triangle they could have three Beavers as the sides of the triangle, or four beavers for a square.  then the shapes started getting more complicated like ‘B’ and ‘W’  Well done to all the beavers for some very imaginative ways or putting the shapes together.

If you missed it and want to play at home you can find the programme here.

Beavers in tents 2015

1st Welwyn Scout Group attended the first County Beavers in Tents at Well End Activity Centre on one of the hottest July weekends. The beavers assisted in erecting their tents before setting off on a series of 10 well organised activities such as erecting a flag – designed and built by the team and cooking dough twists over a campfire!

The whole camp sing song was very popular and “making fire” was voted the most popular base activity by our beavers! The weekend finished with flag break and James Reynolds receiving his Chief Scout’s Bronze Award – well done James.

A few photos of the event show what a brilliant time was had by all!
